A Miniature Jersey farm - focusing on the little things in life
Our mootastic changes
They say the most beautiful rainbows come after the darkest storms. 2020 was a hard year for our farm. Yeah there was a world wide pandemic - but before that had even started we lost our precious baby girl after 8months of pregnancy. Totally out of the blue - and almost 2yrs later theres still no solid answer. God called her home - and while i can think of a thousand other storms I would have chosen over saying goodbye too soon to our daughter that was our storm. Finding how to live with our new “norm” wasn’t easy and there will always be random hard days/moments. After about 6 months I realized I needed to stop everything on the farm and give my entire concentrated attention to me and our children and our adapting. So we sold all our beloved goats - a devastating demolition of everything I had spent years building up. The plan was always to restart again in about two-three years when my son started Kindergarten but after spending so much time looking at my priorities I started to doubt dairy goats would be in my future again. There are just some big things that don’t line up as well as I wanted. Then one day a friend sent a picture of a mini cow - the cutest fluffy mini cow. It got my wheels turning (and those who know me know I can consume a scary amount of data in a very short amount of time if my attention has been caught) and I started investigating that potential. I LOVE cows - well I love their big noses and their moos - what has always deterred me is their size. For some reason the thought of a 1,500lb animal pushing me around wasn’t enticing. There was also a land issue as we are only on an acre and unlikely to ever attain more than that while staying close to schools and jobs. Mini cows however was a different story. I started reading up on all things cow related and bought myself the most recommended cow book. The more research I did the more I felt that this was the direction I wanted to take our farm. So began my hunt and successful acquisition of two lovely registered Mini Jersey heifers. We are in LOVE and so excited for the rainbow at the end of our storm. We are looking forward to continuing to learn and grow - to still have our raw dairy - and to continue expanding our farm! The current plan is to add a couple NPGA registered pygmy goats (again) and some chickens to the mix this next year. Then perhaps 2023 we will add some kune kune piggies to the mix. <3 Our cow RosieMoo (aka Scarlet) will calf the end of June and is bred to a lovely small bull from MI. We are excited to see what she has!
