A Miniature Jersey farm - focusing on the little things in life
Buying a Cow/Calf From Our Farm
A lot goes into raising the perfect dairy cow. Here at Tiptoe Acres we put a lot of effort into making sure our calves have the groundwork they need to be confident and successful members of your ohana and a contributing milk cow on your farm. From birth they are socialized and handled by many different people ranging from 6-40 and encounter many sounds and experiences. We lead train and when they come to you they should be well on their way to being fully lead trained and should be familiar with standing tied and being touched and handled everywhere. Every farm has their own way of raising their animals and while there is no single best way to raise calves - here at Tiptoe Acres we believe that the best place for a calf to be is right next to momma. Which is why our calves are dam raised (not bottle fed) and spend the first 4-5 months nursing and being loved by their momma in addition to our handling. We have found that this raises well behaving cows that are friendly but don’t mistake you and your kids as part of the herd to be challenged and pushed around.
Q&A
How much should I expect to spend?
For a heifer calf you should expect to pay between $8-$10k depending on A2/A2 status and milk production and teat size of her mother. an A2/A2 calf from a cow with large handmilking teats will cost $10k than a A1/A2 calf from a smaller teated cow who would cost $8k. A young cow in milk will be $10-$15k and would come both in milk and either bred to our bull or sent with your choice of semen straw. Occasionally we will have older cows that are nearing the age of retirement. This means they are 10yrs old and probably only have 1-2 more calvings. They are a cheaper way to get started and are usually in the $5k range - but again this is a VERY rare option and they are only sold if they are in the best of health.
I just filled out the waitlist form. What happens next?
Once you’ve filled out the form you will get a text message from me (to the number you used in the form) letting you know where you are on the waitlist and about when I expect to have a calf for you. I may ask some additional questions so that I can be sure we are on the same page and offer any training/farm visits. Once you’ve gotten that text message its a waiting game till i reach out and let you know that a calf has been born that is available. It could be 1-3yrs away. When I message you notifying you of the calf that has been born you have 1 week to think it over and decide if you want to purchase that calf - if you want to stay on the waitlist and wait for a different calf/better time - or if you would like to be removed from the waitlist entirely.
Getting the message that a calf is available - what to expect.
When I message you about an available calf I will tell you everything I have on the calf, parents, DNA results, as well as the price I am asking for the calf. You have a week to decide if you are going to purchase the calf at which point a purchase contract will be emailed to you and a non refundable deposit of $2k is required. The deposit will go to the total purchase price of the calf. The final payment for the calf is due in 4 months when the calf is old enough to leave mother. I will not hold a calf past 5months of age and if you cannot arrange shipping or transportation by that time then the calf will go back up for sale. In the event of an accident should the calf become injured and can no longer be sold (i’ve never had this happen - but its always good to cover all cases!) then your deposit will be fully refunded immediately or you will be offered a calf of equal value if one is available.
